Kanjivaram vs Banarasi Silk: How to Choose

Kanjivaram silk is woven in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu — temple borders, contrast bodies, and a crisp hand that holds pleats. Banarasi silk comes from Varanasi, where brocade and zari are built into the loom itself. We work with Latha Krishnan on Kanjivaram and Meera Devi on Banarasi; both refuse designs that cannot survive a real wedding week.

Kanjivaram tends to be structured. The border is often wide and the body colour blocks cleanly — ideal if you want a sculptural drape and a pallu that stays put. Banarasi can be lighter in the field with motif density in the pallu and border; it falls softly and suits women who prefer a fluid line.

If you are petite, a heavy Kanjivaram border can overwhelm unless you keep pleats narrow and the pallu pinned high. Banarasi with restrained zari often photographs better on smaller frames without extra bulk at the shoulder.

Choose Kanjivaram for the main wedding ceremony, temple functions, and any event where you will sit for long periods — the cloth keeps its shape. Choose Banarasi for reception evenings, cocktail sangeets, and functions where you will move between indoor lighting and flash photography.

Start in our saree collection and filter by how you actually dress. If you live in humid cities, prioritise silks with breathable fields and borders that do not extend into every pleat. Pair either weave with a blouse cut from a complementary solid — echo the border colour, do not match it exactly.
