How to Care for Silk Sarees

Air the saree for a few hours away from direct sun before you fold it. Brush off surface dust along the border, not across the zari. If you spilled something, blot — do not rub. Most silks in our saree edit should go to a trusted dry-cleaner who handles zari; tell them where the stain is and whether the piece is Banarasi brocade or Kanjivaram temple border.

Fold along the length of the saree, placing soft muslin between folds so zari does not bite into silk. Store flat in a breathable cotton bag, not vacuum-sealed plastic — trapped moisture is what dulls gold thread. Add a natural moth deterrent (cedar or neem) in the cupboard, not on the cloth directly.

Roll rather than fold for a suitcase if the trip is short — use tissue at the roll's core. On arrival, hang in a steamy bathroom before wearing; never iron zari directly. For a wedding week with multiple functions, schedule dry-cleaning between events only when the label allows; overwashing shortens the life of brocade.
